The melody preserved in this score was composed especially for the reunion of the founders of Ab Aeterno.
It belongs to a wider body of work concerned with preserving and renewing practical human disciplines—particularly penmanship, draughtsmanship, and mapmaking—alongside music, material culture, and the intimate objects through which people leave evidence of how they thought, made, measured, and loved.
Music has the ability to bypass argument and reach directly into the soul.
Before recorded sound became ordinary, music survived because someone wrote it down, someone learned to read it, and someone else placed their hands upon an instrument and made it live again.
A score is therefore more than a record of notes.
It is a set of instructions carried across distance and time: pitch, rhythm, measure, emphasis, silence, repetition, and movement translated into marks precise enough for one mind to communicate musical intention to another.
To read music is to participate in that transmission.
Ab Aeterno’s sheet music sits at the centre of the unfinished conversation between reason and emotion: between the eighteenth-century Enlightenment and Sturm und Drang.
Here, notation and feeling are not treated as contradictions. They depend upon one another. The score supplies structure, proportion, sequence, and measure; the performer supplies touch, interpretation, memory, restraint, longing, and force.
The same page may therefore produce something recognisably identical and yet never quite the same twice.
The music is preserved through technical discipline, but it becomes intimate only when another human being gives it breath, timing, and hands.
Together, they become precisely the sort of thing the House exists to preserve and renew: intelligence made intimate.
